What does your role at Connolly Brothers entail?

I wear many hats, such as generating construction drawings and coordinating the various engineering drawings with architectural drawings. I review and mark-up engineering drawings, as well as measure and photograph existing buildings for the purpose of creating construction drawings. I also attend meetings with owners leading up to construction documents and assist in coordinating electrical and plumbing requirements with owner's equipment. Additionally, I create most of the tenant fit-up drawings for 152 Conant Street and 138 Conant Street, along with maintaining the overall floor plans for both buildings. My role also involves working with tenants to develop lobby directory strips for both Conant Street buildings.

What makes you successful in your work?

In the early years of my career, it seemed like success was more guided by mentors and co-workers. Later in my career, success became more self-driven. As an example, aside from aiming to get the job done right and on time, when I have downtime between projects, I make it a point to learn more about the program Revit. Revit is the basis for the majority of what I do. You can never learn enough about this program.

What have been some of the most important lessons that you have learned throughout your career?

One of the lessons I've learned is to become somewhat of a multi-tasker – not necessarily just being able to perform more than one task at a time – but having multiple abilities. Also, when looking for a job, my advice would be to tell the truth on your resume. If you do a good job of overselling yourself, you may end up with a job that's too much for you. If you undersell yourself, you're not going to get paid what you're worth.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Aside from being married to my wife Edilene for almost 20 years, attending the occasional car show/drag race is always good for the soul, weather permitting that is. Yard work is a bit of a chore, but there is some satisfaction after it's done when the yard is healthy and green. I have also recently started learning how to play the acoustic guitar. This is a long-term process. The guys in the music videos make it look so easy. Much like learning Revit, you learn a little bit at a time. Fortunately, this instrument has a nice sound even when you don't get it right.
